Chief of Operations - YES Prep System Office

9.25.18 Update: We are now in the interview phase of the candidate selection process with the most competitive candidates who have applied to date. We encourage only the strongest candidates to apply, and we will revisit the application queue only if the candidates currently engaged in the formal process do not meet the organizationís needs. Given a highly competitive candidate pool, it is unlikely we select additional candidates to engage formally. THE CHALLENGE & OPPORTUNITY

Across the nation, only half of all students from low-income communities graduate from high school and only 10% earn a college degree. Even though 84% of their students are economically disadvantaged, YES Prep provides evidence that different outcomes are possible. Ninety-seven (97%) of YES Prep alumni matriculate to college within one year and alumni like Eddie Zapata are earning their college degrees at†four†times the rate of their peers with similar socioeconomic backgrounds. How do they do this? Each of YES Prepís 18 campuses serves 6th-12th graders like Monique Bowie. Students typically enter YES Prep one or more grade levels behind but quickly find themselves on a different life trajectory as a result of transformative relationships with teachers and leaders and access to excellent educational opportunities.

As the first minority-majority city, Houstonís schools cannot keep up with demand from students like Eddie and Monique. Houston is the 4th largest city (on track to become the 3rd), and this booming population translates into 7,000 families on YES Prepís waitlist. YES Prepís student enrollment is estimated to grow from 12,600 to 17,000, between now and 2023.

YES Prep needs a dynamic and diverse Chief of Operations to make our mission a reality.†The role will lead all aspects of YES Prepís operations and information services, including YESís strategic plan; school operations (transportation, food services, & security), facilities management; community engagement; information technology & portfolio management; reporting; procurement and compliance. The†Chief of Operations†will also lead the growth of YES Prep through facility management and financing, ultimately giving thousands of additional students from underserved communities the chance to earn an exceptional, college-ready education.

THE PERSON

We seek staff with diverse backgrounds, talents, interests, and ideas to meet the needs of our growing body of students. The ideal candidate for the†Chief of Operations†at YES Prep is someone who has had operational leadership of an organization or business unit of similar scope and scale to that of YES Prep. Additionally, the ideal candidate has experience working in a dynamic, growing organization during a transformational phase - applying operational expertise to achieve sustainable change and growth as we enter the next phase of our organizationís growth, including the opening of elementary schools. The†Chief of Operations†will be a strategic partner to YES Prep CEO and a leader who is not afraid to engage in challenging discussions and share his/her opinion based on personal and professional experience. The†Chief of Operations†will work to gain the trust of the YES Prep Board of Directors, Executive Leadership Team and the entire organization to instill confidence in YES Prepís operations and infrastructure with the goal of YES Prep becoming a sustainable institution. The person will be mission-driven with a tangible passion for ensuring YES Prep continues to provide life-changing opportunities for students of low-income communities. The person will be entrepreneurial by nature and able to positively impact both strategic and tactical initiatives by managing multiple projects at a time. Ultimately, the ideal†Chief of Operations candidate†identities with, and appreciates the work of, every contributor across all levels of the YES Prep organization.

THE ROLE

When you join the YES Prep team, you will:

  • Serve as a strategic counselor and thought partner to the CEO and other senior leaders, working to achieve YES Prepís mission while managing its operations in a disciplined, conservative manner;
  • Serve on YES Prepís Executive Leadership Team and contribute to setting vision and strategic direction for the organization including growth plans and initiatives;
  • Lead a high-performing team, including senior-level leaders of Facility Management, School Operations, Information Services & Portfolio Management; model and sustain a culture of high performance and service orientation among team members;
  • Drive toward agile, sustainable, low risk functions across the technology workstreams through the leadership of Information Technology, Software Development, Portfolio & Learning Technology teams;
  • Work closely with members of the YES Prep Board of Directors, particularly the chair of the Facilities & Finance Committees, to maintain a strategic plan that ensures the stability and sustainability of YES Prep; lead and effectively communicate on long-term facilities planning, forecasting and modeling; assess operational implications of potential strategic and growth alternatives;
  • Demonstrate expertise across various workstreams including but not limited to: negotiation, documentation, prioritization, design, construction, security, maintenance of real estate, custody of funds, securities, deeds, bills of sale, insurance policies, contracts, and other similar documents and instruments relating to the business operation of YES;
  • Serve as an ambassador of partnerships across the landscape prioritizing service on steering committees to establish, facilitate, and maintain relationships with districts and other organizations;
  • Understand and ensure that YES Prep is in full compliance with all operational requirements of the Texas Education Agency (TEA), and all other state and federal agencies; ensure implementation of appropriate policies and procedures to comply with all government agency regulations; ensure accurate and timely preparation of audits and reporting;
  • Serve as a representative for YES Prep internally and externally Ė engaging stakeholders from School Directors to legislators in Austin - communicating proactively, knowledgably and passionately and about YES Prepís mission;
  • Foster a success-oriented environment, responsibly measuring the timeliness and accuracy of all operating conditions while mitigating risk through the development and maintenance of systems, processes, and protocols to be prepared for any incidents; and
  • Maintain a close working relationship with other members of the Home Office Team, School Directors and relevant campus staff to ensure exchange of best practices, coordination of efforts, and general support for the Operations department.

THE MUST HAVES

  • Belief in and commitment to the mission, vision, and core value of YES Prep Public Schools;
  • Commitment to leading as a practitioner of equity with capacity to concurrently lead the organization operationally;
  • The ability to commit a minimum of 3-5 years through the next chapter of the organizationís growth as we launch elementary schools;
  • Bachelorís degree from an accredited institution (MBA or other advanced degree preferred);
  • 7+ years of experience in public school operations, preferably in a management role; and
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
