Instructional Coach - YES Prep System Office (2019-2020)

Department: Teaching Excellence

POSITION: Instructional Coach 

REPORTS TO: Manager of Instructional Coaching 

POSITION TYPE: 12-month 

LOCATION: Houston, Texas 

THE CHALLENGE 

Across the nation, only half of all students from low-income communities graduate from high school and only 10% earn a college degree. Even though 85% of our students are economically disadvantaged, YES Prep provides evidence that different outcomes are possible. Eighty-seven (87%) of YES Prep alumni matriculate to college within one year and alumni like Eddie Zapata are earning their college degrees at five times the rate of their peers with similar socioeconomic backgrounds. How do we do this? Each of YES Prep’s 18 campuses serves 6th-12th graders like Monique Bowie. Students typically enter YES Prep one or more grade levels behind, but quickly find themselves on a different life trajectory. This is a result of transformative relationships with teachers and leaders, and access to excellent educational opportunities. 

As the first minority-majority city, Houston’s schools cannot keep up with demand from students like Eddie and Monique. Houston is the 4th largest city (on track to become the 3rd), and this booming population translates into 2,000 families on YES Prep’s waitlist. YES Prep’s student enrollment is estimated to grow 31% between now and 2023 (from just over 13,000 students currently to 17,000).  

THE OPPORTUNITY 

YES Prep needs a dynamic Instructional Coach with a diverse set of experiences, to make our mission a reality. As a YES Prep employee, you will achieve jaw-dropping results, create pathways to opportunity for our students, build transformative relationships, and eliminate educational inequities to advance social justice.  

To put it simply, you will play an integral role in guiding beginning teachers toward success with their students and student achievement through classroom culture and management, instructional planning, and delivery. 

THE ROLE 

When you join the YES Prep team, some of the exciting work and responsibilities will include: 

  • Regularly observe classroom instruction of novice teachers and provide developmentally appropriate coaching via written and oral feedback (as identified by the Instructional Excellence Rubric/ Teaching Excellence Rubric) 

  • Assist novice teachers in collecting and analyzing student performance data to drive instructional decisions 

  • Differentiate support for novice teachers based upon their needs 

  • Provide lesson planning support to novice teachers 

  • Arrange opportunities for novice teachers to co-observe master teachers 

  • Plan and deliver focus lessons in novice teachers’ classrooms to model effective practices 

  • Communicate regularly and engage in collaboration with campus instructional leaders and content leaders to align feedback and support for novice teachers 

  • Facilitate professional learning sessions during the summer (Induction) and throughout the school year (Professional Learning Saturdays) 

  • Work collaboratively with campus leadership to develop targeted growth plans for beginning teachers 

  • Track teacher development and observations efficiently 

  • Complete Alternative Certification paperwork according to TE and state guidelines 

  • Additional duties as assigned 

THE PERSON

MUST HAVES 

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year educational institution 

  • At least 3 years of teaching experience 

  • Current teacher and/or principal certification 

  • Outstanding record of student achievement results 

  • Strong knowledge of contributing factors that lead to an effective novice teacher 

  • Experience with teacher supervision (as a department head, mentor, or coach) 

  • Experience planning and delivering professional development to adults 

  • Belief in and commitment to the mission and core values of YES Prep Public Schools 

  • Openness to giving and receiving frequent feedback 

  • Demonstrated ability to work on a team 

  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks and initiatives at once 

  • Ability to maintain emotional control under stress

Selection Process

The selection process will follow the below timeline:

  • Application window: December 10, 2018- January 13, 2019
  • Candidates moving forward will be notified of selection activities on February 6, 2019
  • Candidates must submit selection activities by February 10th 2019 at 11:59 pm CST
  • Final Interviews will take place from February 19, 2019- March 5, 2019

Interview Requirements 

Candidates participating in the Instructional Coach Interview process will be required to submit a video of themselves teaching. The video must be at least 15 minutes long, and candidate should also plan to submit the lesson plan of the lesson taught in the video.Additionally, it will include a half-day interview taking place on March 1st or March 8th.  In the event that you advance to this stage in the process, please make arrangements to attend the half-day interview. Please email Sarah Murphy Traylor with any questions at Sarah.MurphyTraylor@yesprep.org
