Compliance Specialist - YES Prep Southwest (IMMEDIATE OPENING)

Department: Special Education
Location: Houston, TX

POSITION: Compliance Specialist 

REPORTS TO: School Director, Mgr – Campus SPED, Director of Special Education 

LOCATION: YES Prep Southwest 


Across the nation, only half of all students from low-income communities graduate from high school and only 10% earn a college degree. Even though 85% of their students are economically disadvantaged, YES Prep provides evidence that different outcomes are possible. Eighty-seven (87%) of YES Prep alumni matriculate to college within one year and alumni like Eddie Zapata are earning their college degrees at five times the rate of their peers with similar socioeconomic backgrounds. How do they do this? Each of YES Prep’s 18 campuses serves 6th-12th graders like Monique Bowie. Students typically enter YES Prep one or more grade levels behind, but quickly find themselves on a different life trajectory. This is a result of transformative relationships with teachers and leaders, and access to excellent educational opportunities. 

As the first minority-majority city, Houston’s schools cannot keep up with demand from students like Eddie and Monique. Houston is the 4th largest city (on track to become the 3rd), and this booming population translates into 2,000 families on YES Prep’s waitlist. YES Prep’s student enrollment is estimated to grow 31% between now and 2023 (from just over 13,000 currently to 17,000).  

YES Prep needs a dynamic and diverse Compliance Specialist to make our mission a reality. As a YES Prep employee, you will achieve jaw-dropping results, create pathways to opportunity for our students, build transformative relationships, and eliminate educational inequities to advance social justice. To put it simply, you will play an integral part of coordination, planning and preparation of compliance documents for students eligible for special education services, and facilitating ARD meetings.

When you join the YES Prep team, some of the exciting work will include: 

  • Schedules Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) meetings and notifies parents of the ARD meeting, including distribution of ARD calendar to appropriate ARD Committee members in a timely fashion; notifies/invites all appropriate school personnel of ARD meetings/ARD schedule changes 

  • Ensures that federal/state timelines are met with respect to functions of ARD Committee meetings; requests for additional assessments and required timelines set by ARD Committee 

  • Monitors ARD paperwork completed by campus personnel; completes and turns in ARD paperwork to official audit file within 24 hours of the meeting; turns in PEIMS forms to District Compliance Manager within 48 hours of the ARD meeting 

  • Completes lists, forms, reports, PEIMS forms, and data required by the Special Education Office by due dates (e.g. October counts, Indicator submissions, etc) 

  • Maintains current state assessment test lists, referrals for related services evaluation maintains communication among assessment, service providers, and related services personnel 

  • Provides for systematic communication among special and general education personnel (with respect to ARD meetings and decisions, IEPs, accommodations needed in the general education setting, relevant instructional concerns and progress) 

  • Completes applicable ARD supplements with accompanying data collected by campus staff (i.e., all IEPs, BIPs, Transitions plans, Autism supplements etc.) 

  • Follows procedures for Progress Reporting, folder documentation, parent communication, etc 

  • Assists campus administrator(s) to ensure compliance with mandates guaranteed to students with disabilities by state/federal law; ensures compliance with local policies and procedures outlined for this population 

  • Maintains thorough documentation regarding any significant problems with ARD Committee procedures; attends Special Education staff meetings; attends relevant professional development 

  • Collaborates with the Campus Testing Coordinator to schedule, ensure correct testing materials and accommodations are implemented 

  • Supports students in small group and/or classroom settings as needs arise 

  • Assist in 504 Compliance as determined by individual campus 

  • Additional duties as assigned 


  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year educational institution 

  • Valid Special Education Teacher Certification 

  • If you hold a valid Special Education Teacher Certification in another state/country appropriate for assignment, you will be required to have your credentials transferred to Texas within one calendar year of hire date 

  • Two years of relevant work experience in Special Education as a teacher, school-based leader or district leader 

  • Belief in and commitment to the mission and core value of YES Prep Public Schools 

  • Openness to giving and receiving frequent feedback 

  • Demonstrated ability to work on a team 

  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks and initiatives at once 

  • Ability to maintain emotional control under stress
